ROAD TRIP: Yellowstone to Glacier via Scenic Highway 83 

When traveling between Yellowstone National Park and Glacier National Park you have three route options; highway 83, Flathead Lake or East Glacier. Head west on interstate 90 before taking a detour up to the Seeley-Swan Scenic Highway. Enjoy this lush 90-mile corridor of Highway 83 stretching through the Swan Valley from Seeley Lake to Swan Lake. As you're driving through this valley flanked by the Swan Range and the Mission Mountains watch out for deer. Compared to Interstate 90 this is a more secluded route through forested scenery, winding by numerous lakes with a few diners in between.

1. Lewis and Clark Caverns, Whitehall 

Discover one of the most highly decorated limestone caverns in North America. Camp, hike and experience amazing geologic wonders at Montana's first and best known state park. The cave’s are only accessible by tour so check out the schedule ahead of time. Campsites, a tipi and cabins are available to rent here.

2. Missouri Headwater State Park, Three Forks 

Whether you're looking to get away from it all or learn a little history consider a stop at the Missouri Headwaters State Park. Camp where Lewis and Clark stayed in 1805 and fly fish at the confluence of the Jefferson, Madison and Gallatin Rivers. 

3. Broadwater Hot Springs, Helena 

Soak in this hot spring located just 10 minutes from downtown Helena. With five pools of varying temperatures and an attached taphouse and grill you could spend hours here. Enjoy drinks in the adults only pool with an adjacent full service bar. 

4. Gates of the Mountains Boat Tours, Helena 

The 120-minute cruise starts in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains. Watch for wildlife and pictographs aboard an open-air boat as you glide through the rugged scenery of the Missouri River.

5. Sculpture in the Wild, Lincoln 

Aiming to celebrate the rich cultural history of the Blackfoot valley this sculpture park displays both temporary and permanent works of art. Fun for all ages enjoy strolling the grounds and interacting with these pieces. Entry is free. 

6. Clearwater Canoe Trail, Seeley Lake 

Paddle 4 miles down the Clearwater River through marshy willows and lush forest. Option to arrange a local outfitters to deliver canoe’s directly to your starting point and a short hike back to the car eliminates the need for a shuttle. Watch for wildlife as you follow the river to where it empties out into the glassy Seeley Lake. 

7. Holland Lake Waterfall, Condon

Enjoy this short, low elevation gain hike off of Highway 83. The trail begins above the lake giving you scenic views of the lake framed by the Swan Range. Navigate around the lake before scrambling over some boulders at the end to get the best view of the falls. 

8. Jewel Basin, Kalispell

Enter the Flathead National Forest for amazing views of Glacier National Park. Designated for hiking, camping and fishing this is a great spot to spend some time outside of the car. Look for mountain goats on your hikes but enjoy a fraction of the crowds that Glacier has. 

9. Conrad Mansion Museum, Kalispell 

Visit this mansion built by the founders of Kalispell. This 13,000 square foot mansion was completed in 1895. Check out their website for information on the rotating exhibits. Docent or self guided tours available year round. Ghost tours available seasonally. 

10. Whitefish Farmers Markets, Whitefish 

From the end of May through September you can head over to the Depot Park in Whitefish for food, and fun at the farmers market. Join the town every Tuesday from 5 - 730 pm to check out some local artists.
